What is Burrow Blitz?
Burrow Blitz is an arcade digging game. You tunnel through layers of dirt, clearing out the creatures that live underground. You can pump them up until they pop, or dig under a rock and let it fall on them. Clear every enemy to move on to the next round, which gets faster and busier as you go.
How to play
Dig tunnels by moving through the dirt. When an enemy gets close, pump it until it pops. Keep pumping, because if you stop too soon it deflates and comes after you again.
Undermine rocks to crush enemies. Squashing several at once with one rock is worth big bonuses. After two rocks fall, a bonus item appears in the middle of the screen.
Watch out for ghost eyes, which drift straight through the dirt, and dragon-types, which breathe fire sideways through tunnels. When only one enemy is left it tries to escape to the surface, so catch it before it gets away.
Themes and quick changes
Choose from five visual themes before you play. The ⚙ Change game menu offers quick changes, including Easy mode, slower or faster enemies, more rocks, extra lives, faster digging, no fire, fewer ghosts, easier popping and Hard mode. It's an easy way to make the game gentler for younger players or tougher for experts.
Controls
Desktop: arrows or WASD to move, Space to pump (hold or tap), P to pause and M to mute.
Phone (portrait): the d-pad is in the bottom-left corner and the PUMP button is in the bottom-right. ⚙ opens Change game.
Controller or Xbox: use the stick to move (push lightly to creep, fully to run) or the d-pad. A pumps, B or Start pauses, Y opens Change game, and View mutes. Start also begins a game.
Strategy tips
- Dig your own paths. Enemies follow tunnels, so long straight tunnels let you line them up for a pump or a rock.
- Lure enemies under rocks. Dig beneath a rock, wait for enemies to follow you in, then step aside.
- Keep your distance. Pump enemies before they reach you, and back down a tunnel if one gets too close.
- Grab the bonus item. Dropping two rocks makes it appear, and it's worth going after.
- Watch the last enemy. It runs for the surface, so cut it off before it escapes.
The genre it's inspired by
Digging games like this trace back to a 1982 arcade game in which a small hero tunneled through dirt and defeated monsters by inflating them or dropping rocks on them. Its mix of free-form digging and clever enemy behavior made it a lasting arcade favorite. Burrow Blitz is our own original version of that idea, with new themes, creatures and options. It isn't affiliated with any earlier arcade game.
Developer's notes
Burrow Blitz was built to play well on a TV with an Xbox controller as well as on phones. The stick has two speeds, so you can creep carefully or run, and the quick changes menu exists so families can tune the challenge without digging through settings screens.
