What is Card Sharp Saloon?
A frontier saloon run by clockwork hosts and clanky robots. Bolt the robot bartender and Mr. Ashby, a host who is almost too lifelike, greet you at the entrance, and everyone has something to say. The main floor has a poker table and a blackjack table, played with play chips only: nothing to buy, and if you run out, the bar hands you a fresh stack for free. Upstairs, at the card table by the moonlit window, you pick one of four solitaire games. Each room and each table has its own music, and the speaker button sets the music, effects and voice volumes. The back room (Hearts and Spades) opens later.
The poker table
Play Texas Hold'em, 5-Card Draw or 7-Card Stud at fixed limits against four regulars, on Easy, Normal or Sharp. A session is 12 hands. Each regular has a habit you can learn and use: one calls far too often, one gives up when the betting gets raised twice, one loves any pair a little too much, and one bluffs on the last round and can't keep it to himself. Expect to lose a few hands while you figure them out.
The faro table
Faro was the most popular gambling game of the Old West. Silas Quill banks one honest 52-card deck from a brass dealing box. The first card, the soda, is burned face up. Then each turn he draws two cards: the first is the loser, so bets on that rank lose, and the second is the winner, so bets on that rank pay 1 to 1. Bets on other ranks stay put for the next turn.
Tap the cards on the layout to bet on ranks (up to 200 per rank). Turn on Copper and tap a bet to flip it so it wins when its rank loses. If both cards in a turn match, it is a split and the house takes half. With three cards left you can call the turn, naming the exact order of loser, winner and the last card (the hock), for 4 to 1, or 1 to 1 when two of them match. The brass case keeper slides a bead for every card dealt, so you can see which ranks are still live. A full deck of 25 turns is one session: finish ahead and your chips won times 10 go on the saloon high scores, up to 15,000.
The blackjack table
Dealer Unit 7 deals from a six-deck shoe and stands on all 17s. Blackjack pays 3 to 2. You can hit, stand, double on your first two cards, and split pairs up to four hands (split Aces play like any other pair: hit, double or split again, though a 21 after a split counts as 21, not blackjack). A session is 20 hands, with bets of 10, 25, 50 or 100.
The four games
- Klondike: build four foundations from Ace to King by suit, and stack the seven columns down in alternating colors. Only a King fills an empty column. Pick Draw 1 for a gentler game or Draw 3 for a harder one.
- FreeCell: every card is dealt face up into eight columns. Four free cells each hold one card. You can move a run of cards at once when there are enough free cells and empty columns to make room.
- Golf: seven columns of five face-up cards. Play the bottom card of any column onto the open card if it is one higher or one lower, in any suit (no wrapping between King and Ace). When nothing fits, turn a new card from the deck. Clear all seven columns to win.
- Pyramid: clear a pyramid of 28 cards by pairing two open cards that add up to 13 (Jack 11, Queen 12). Kings go alone. Draw from the deck for more pairs; you can go through it three times.
Controls
- Tap a card to send it to the best spot, with foundations tried first. If it has nowhere to go, it stays selected; tap where it should land.
- Or drag a card, or a run of cards, onto a pile. In Pyramid, drag one card onto its partner.
- Cards that can never be needed again go up to the foundations on their own in Klondike and FreeCell.
- Undo steps back one move. New deal shuffles a fresh game. The ♪ button turns the music on or off.
Scoring
Poker: chips won over a 12-hand session, times 8 (Easy ×0.6, Sharp ×1.4). Blackjack: chips won over 20 hands, times 10. Sessions that end behind don't post, and the top score is 15,000. Solitaire: only won games score: 10,000 minus 6 points per second and 12 per move, never below 500. Klondike Draw 3 earns a ×1.5 bonus. The clock starts on your first move. All four games share one Card Sharp Saloon board, and each score shows which game it came from.
Tips
- Klondike: turn over face-down cards whenever you can, and don't empty a column without a King ready.
- FreeCell: keep free cells empty for as long as you can.
- Golf: look for long runs up and down before you turn a new card, and save cards that link two columns.
- Pyramid: look ahead before you pair, so you don't bury a card you need.
